 Changing in Pronoun

Dear reader, While changing direct to speech, we face great difficulties in changing the pronoun. Always remember that :-
  • Only the pronoun of the first person and the second person and the words related to them change.
  • Third-person pronouns will never change.
  • Only change Pronouns that are inside the quotation mark.

Rule No. 1 :-

The first person pronouns of reported speech (I, me, my, mine, we, us, our, ours) change according to person, number, and gender of the Subject of Reporting verb.
Example:-
1️⃣ Direct  : : Mahesh said, "I have not completed my essay."
Indirect  : :  Mahesh said that he had not completed his essay.
2️⃣ Direct  :  They said to me, "We were waiting for Rama ."
Indirect  :  They told me that they had been waiting for Rama.

Rule No. 2:-

The Second person pronouns of reported speech (you, your, yours) change according to person, number, and gender of the Object of Reporting verb.
Example:-
1️⃣ Direct  : : The principal said to me, "You have not called your father."
Indirect  : :  The principal told me that I had not called my brother.
2️⃣ Direct  :  The manager said to me, "You may go home as your work is done."
Indirect  :  The manager told me that I might go home as my work was done.

Rule No.3:-

There is no change in the third person pronouns of the Reported Speech(He, she, it, they, his, him, her, hers, its, them, their, theirs).
Example:-
1️⃣ Direct  : : The teacher said, "He will pass in English."
Indirect  : :  The teacher said that he would pass in English.
2️⃣ Direct  :  Thomas said to Rehan, "It is a surprise to meet you."
Indirect  :  Thomas told Rehan that It was a surprise to meet him.
